The reviews of critics pouring down on pianist Sunghoon Hwang have caught the attention of musicians around the world. He has swept 41 international competitions totally, winning 10 special awards. He possesses an extensive repertoire ranging from Baroque to contemporary music.

At the Porto International Competition, he won the special award for contemporary music interpretation, the special award for French music interpretation at the Epinal International Competition and Andorra International Competition. He has also been awarded the special awards for classical sonata interpretation at the Carlet International Competition and for romantic music interpretation at the Guardiagrele International Competition.

In 2011, he successfully completed Recital Tour in Germany featuring Bach’s masterpiece, “Goldberg Variations”, establishing himself as an outstanding pianist in all genres. Particularly, his solo Debut Recital at the Carnegie Hall in New York in 2017 received high praise from the prominent media New York Concert Review stating “sensuous evocations..”, “with such sensitivity of phrasing and colors..”, “building swirl of momentum and thunderous climaxes..”, “tremendous intensity..”

Sunghoon Hwang has successfully performed with various orchestras, including the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Montbeliard, Orquestra Granada and many others. Invited to international festivals such as the Busoni Festival in Bozen, Alfredo Speranza Festival in Rimini, Bol Summer Festival in Croatia and many others. Hwang has also released 2 CDs titled “Artist Poetry I & II” in Germany to critical acclaim.

After graduating from the Korea National University of Arts with the highest score, Hwang appeared at the Chosun Ilbo’s New Young Artist Concerts. Later, he graduated from the Santa Cecilia National Music Academy in Italy with a perfect score and completed the “Perfectionnement” at the Ecole Normale de musique in Paris, France. In 2008, he also graduated “Konzertexamen” from the Hannover Musikhochschule.

Besides his international pianist activities, he has also begun to be recognized as a teacher. Invited to give Master Classes at the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg in Germany in 2006, at the Kloster Michaelstein Sachsen-Anhalt in 2009, at the Rutgers University in the United States in 2016 and many others. From 2011 to 2018, he was appointed as a judge for the “Claude Bonneton” International Piano Competition in France annually. Hwang has also been invited as a judge to numerous other international piano competitions such as Maria Canals, Rina Sala Gallo, Roma, Tokyo, G.Raciti and so on.

Teaching as an Instructor at the Hildesheim University in Germany from 2009 to 2013, Hwang has been working as the artistic director for the “Sviatoslav Richter” Online International Piano Competition and the “G-Clef” Online International Music Competition since 2020.
